STD 6- SCIENCE- WATER IS LIFE- NOTES

Water is Life
1 Explain how drought  causes extensive damage to human life and property?
ANS:
1.             Droughts results in dying up of the crops and vegetation.
2.             Its leads to scarcity of food and fodder for humans and animal life respectively.
3.             Its leads to malnutrition in human and animals.
2. Explain how ground water is recharged?
ANS:  Trees help in recharging the ground water supply. The roots of the tree grow and spread in the soil. This helps in creating open spaces in the soil. The rainwater and water from other sources such as rivers and ponds seeps through the soil and fills the empty spaces and cracks deep below the ground. By this process groundwater gets recharged.
3.Explain the factors responsible for the depletion of water table?
ANS:
1.             Increase in population
2.             Increase in agriculture activities,
3.             Rapid Urbanization,
4.             Deforestation,
5.             Mismanagement of water resources

4.             When does a drought occur?
ANS:  When there is insufficient or no rainfall occurs for more than a year in a region, the scarcity of water happens. Ponds and wells dry up. The soil continues to lose water due to evaporation and transpiration and eventually dry. This leads to drought.

       5. Why is there a need for conserving water? Give two reasons.
ANS: 1. Increasing population need more water.
2. Availability of water is decreasing day-by-day.

6.             What is rainwater harvesting? What are the two rainwater harvesting techniques?
ANS:  Collecting rain water and storing it for later use is called rainwater harvesting. The two techniques of harvesting are:
1.             Rooftop rainwater harvesting.
2.             Allowing water into ground directly through roadsides drains.

7.             How are clouds  formed?
ANS: Clouds are formed due to process of evaporation  and condensation when air moves up, it gets cooler and cooler. At sufficient height the air become so cool that water vapours present in the air condense. They  form tiny droplets and float in air as clouds.

Q2. Define the following
1. Freezing
2. Melting
3. Evaporation
4. Condensation
5. Precipitation

6. Groundwater
7. Flood
8. Drought
9. Rainwater harvesting
10. Hail

STD 6- SCIENCE- LIFE CAN ADAPT- NOTES

LIFE CAN ADAPT
Q.1. Define :
1. Habitat        2. Adaptation            3. Succulents    4. Halophytes  5. Mesophytes

Q.2. Give reasons :
a. Speed  is important for certain animals to survive in grasslands.
Ans. Speed is important for certain animals to survive in grasslands in order to escape from predators.
b. Desert animals like rat , snakes , etc. dig burrows.
Ans. The burrows protect them from heat and loss of water from their body.
c. Leaves of  mountain region trees are needle like.
Ans. Leaves of  mountain region trees are needle like to slide off easily the rain water and snow.
d. Lion has :
i. rusty colour
ii. eyesinfront of face
iii. strong claws
Ans.
i.                Rusty brown colour—to hide in grasslands.
ii.           Eyes infront—to locate its prey.
iii.       Strong claws---  to creep up to its prey without making sound while hunting.

e. Deer has
i. eyes located on side
ii. strong teeth
Ans. i. .eyes located on side—to look in all directions for danger.
ii. strong teeth—for chewing hard plants stems of the forest.

f. Roots of aquatic plants are absent or poorly developed.
Ans. Due to abundant water absorbed directly by plants, the roots of aquatic plants become less significant .Therefore, these are either absent or poorly developed.

Q.3. Q/A-----
1. Name the body part that help frog –
a. to swim in water
b. catch prey
Ans. a. Webbed feet
b. Strong back legs

2. How are desert plants adapted in desert?
Ans. The following features help the desert plants to survive in desert---
·     Leaves modified to spines to prevent water loss.
·     Stems carry out photosynthesis.
·     Stems are also covered with thick waxy layer to retain water.
·     Extensive root system so as to go very deep into the soil to absorb water.

3. List the features of plants in grasslands.
Ans. The features of plants are ----
·     The grasses growing here have flexible stalks so that they bend and do not break in windy conditions.
·     They have strong roots to anchor the grass and small leaves to reduce loss of water.
·     Trees growing here are also small with small leaves and the roots go deep into the soil in search of water.
4. List the features possessed by animals living on mountains.
Ans.i. These animals have thick skin or fur to protect them from cold.
ii. They also have a thick layer of fat beneath their skin for insulation against cold.
iii.       Some animals like mountain goats has long hair to keep it warm and strong hooves for running up the rocky slopes of the mountains.
5. How do dolphins and whales breathe?
Ans.  Aquatic animals like dolphins and whales do not have gills. They breathe in air through nostrils or blowholes that are located on upper parts of their heads. They can stay inside water for a long time without breathing. They come out time to time to breathe in air.
6. What makes aquatic plant float?
Ans. Aquatic plants can float because of the following features—
i.                Their stems are long, slender, weak, spongy ( Have air spaces) and flexible. This reduces the weight of plants and thus help them in floating. Eg. In Nelumbo.
ii.           In some plants like Lemna, leaves are flat, broad and covered with waxy coating to repel water.
iii.       In submerged plants, all parts grow underwater. They have narrow and thin ribbon like leaves which can bend in flowing water.
7. Why camel is called ship of desert?
Ans.  Camel is called as ship of desert because of its following features---
DRAW DIAGRAM (PG. NO. 103) FROM TEXTBOOK.
Q.4. Differences between ----
i. Xerophytes and hydrophytes
Ans.
Hydrophytes
Xerophytes
These plants live in conditions of plenty of water.
These plants live in conditions of water scarcity
Root system not well developed or absent
Extensive well developed root system
Leave are large and broad
Leaves are small and spine shaped
e.g.hydrilla,lotus
e.g. cactus , opuntia , etc

ii. Floating plants and submerged plants---
Floating plants
Submerged plants
1.These plants floats freely on water
1. These plants are submerged in water.
2. Their leaves are flat and broad.
2. Their leaves are thin and ribbon like.
3. Eg. Lemna, Wolffia, etc.
3. Eg. Hydrilla, Vallisneria, etc.
