5. Answer the following questions in short.
a. What do you mean by malnutrition?
Ans:- Malnutrition is a condition that develops from eating a diet that either lacks one or more major nutrients or has more of them. Poor eating habits or lack of food leads to malnutrition.
b. Write the food items in which the following vitamins and minerals are found: Calcium, Iron, Iodine
Vitamins and minerals | Food sources |

Iron | Green leafy vegetables, whole wheat, pulses, apples, raisins, fish, liver and meat |

c. Why is Vitamin D called the Sunshine vitamin?
Ans:- Vitamin D is made by the skin when the body is exposed to sunlight, hence it is also called as the Sunshine vitamin.
6. Give reasons.
Fats are important to the body.
Ans:- Fat is an important part of a healthy diet. Fat from the diet gives the body energy and warmth. Fats in moderate quantities are essential to the body.
We must ensure that we have a balanced diet.
Ans:- A diet should contain all the major nutrients namely, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibers and water in proper amounts. The daily intake of food which contains all the necessary nutrients in the right quantities is called a balanced diet. A balanced diet helps us keep our body healthy and fight against diseases.
7. Answer the following questions in detail.
State the sources, uses and deficiency diseases of Vitamin A,B,K
b. Write a short note on the importance of water for the human body.
Ans:-The human body is made up of 70% of water and it is important to keep all the organs of the body in proper working conditions. Some of the important functions of the water are as follows:
>>It helps in regulating the body temperature.
>>It is a major component of the blood.
>>It helps in absorption of nutrients as well as transport of substances inside our body.
>> It helps in the lubrication of joints and in the digestion process.
>> It plays a vital role in the removal of waste material from our body.
C. State the symptoms of anaemia.
Ans:- The symptoms of anaemia include pale skin, flat and pale nails, dark patches below eyes. The person looks tired and suffers from frequent headaches. An anaemic person becomes breathless and gets tired easily and therefore cannot work efficiently. An anaemic student cannot concentrate and as a result learning becomes a difficult task for them.

9. Practical based question.
Niraj was very excited to try out the starch test which he learned at school. Back home he took an apple and cut a small slice out of it. He added a few drops of iodine solution to it and waited. However he could not observe the colour change like he had seen at the school.
a. Can you suggest a reason for this?
Ans:- Apples contain sugars and not starch.
b. Which food item should he test that will show a colour change?
Ans:- He should test food items having starch like potato, rice, etc.

One day Amit’s maid brought her 4 year old son to Amit’s house. Amit noticed that the boy’s legs were swollen and he was quite short for his age. He was also looking pale. Amit gave some milk to the boy and also requested his mother to feed him milk and eggs daily.
Answer the following questions.
a. Which disease do you think the boy is suffering from?
Ans:-. Kwashiorkor.
b. What values are displayed by Amit’s action?
Ans:-caring, helpful, kind, etc.
11. HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills)
a. Malu loves eating cakes and pastries. She eats only dal and rice, and avoids all kind of vegetables in her daily meal. She feels tired all day long whether she is at school or on the playground. What do you think is the reason for this? What can you suggest to her?
Ans:- Fruits and vegetables are low in calories and rich in vitamins, minerals, and fibers which give disease fighting ability to the body. Green vegetable mostly contains calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, zinc and vitamins. Fruits contain mostly vitamins and minerals. While rice is a rich source of carbohydrates and dal is rich sources of protein they only provide energy and body-building materials to the body. Hence for proper functioning body need vitamins and minerals.
b. Your friend Rajni is overweight and is keen on losing weight. What change will you suggest to her in order to achieve a loss of weight?
Ans:- In order to lose weight Rajni needs to have a balanced diet. She should avoid foods with high levels of fats and sugars. She should also regularly exercise.
